Bauchi first Lady Hajiya A’isha Lami tasks women Journalists on nation building

Members of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) have been tasked by the First Lady and wife of the Bauchi state Governor, Dr A’isha Bala Mohammed to inspire new ideas and ensure collaborations that will further strengthen the role of journalists in nation building.

Hajiya A’isha who made the call during the NAWOJ’s first extended meeting of its Central Working Committee in Bauchi on Tuesday, 22/10/2024, she noted that inspiring other women, will lead to emancipating women and children who are the most vulnerable members of the society.She commended their dedication, and acknowledged the many challenges that journalists, particularly women face in the course of discharging their work across the globe.

The First Lady added that women journalists are sometimes subjected to threats, intimidation and even gender violence for simply doing their jobs.

“Through your stories, you inform, educate, and empower. In a country like ours, with its rich diversity and complex challenges, the role of journalism in fostering unity, holding leadership accountable, and promoting development cannot be overstated,” A’isha Bala Mohammed said.

According to her, the society must ensure that journalists, especially women are given the support, protection, and opportunities they need to thrive and contribute meaningfully to the collective progress of Nigeria.

The First lady commended Journalists for being the gatekeepers of truth, adding that women journalists, in particular, bring a unique perspective to nation- building.

Hajiya A’isha said that the safety and security of journalists is non-negotiable, maintained that, it is the duty of governments at all levels to protect those who risk their lives in the service of mankind and humanity.She stated that her Foundation ‘Almuhibba Foundation’ is into women activities and engagements aimed at addressing noticeable challenges of vulnerable women and children.

In her remarks, the National Chairperson of NAWOJ, Hajiya A’isha Ibrahim, commended the first lady for her efforts in uplifting the lives of women and children out of the shackles of poverty.

According to her, NAWOJ is working in partnership with relevant stakeholders to train and retrain her members for effective reportage.

Also speaking, the chairperson of NAWOJ, Bauchi State Chapter, Rashida Yusuf, appreciated the state government for supporting them immensely.

She extended NAWOJ’s gratitude to the first lady and the commissioner of Women Affairs for supporting them at all times.

The meeting tagged “BAUCHI 2024” had CWC members comprising of National officers, Zonal officers and state chairperson and secretaries of state chapters in attendance.

Other important dignitaries who attended the meeting are Bauchi state Honourable Commissioner of Information, Comrade Usman Danturaki Zanna Dujima of Dass, SSA Media to the governor, Comrade Mukhtar Gidado, former national secretary of NUJ, Mr Shu’aibu Usman Leman, Deputy National president, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Alhaji Alhassan Yaya among others.
