Niger state gov’t constitutes 12-man committee for implementation of new minimum wage

The Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Niger State Council, Comrade Idrees Abdulkareem Lafene, has said that workers in the service of Niger state would enjoy the minimum wage with effect from October, 2024.

Idrees Lafene disclosed that a 12-man committee has already been constituted for the implementation of the new minimum wage as announced by President Ahmed Bola Tinubu in April, this year.Speaking with Journalists in an interview in his office Tuesday, Lafene posited that the governor has already constituted a committee saddled with the responsibility of implementation of the new minimum wage to civil servants in Niger state.

Comrade Lafene stated that Governor Umaru Mohammed Bago has promised to commence the implementation of the new minimum wage immediately after the committee submitted its report.

According to the NLC Chairman, in an interface with the governor, “the governor has assured his readiness to commence the payment of the new minimum wage with effect from this month, October. But his problem is with the local government workers.

"I don't have any problem with the state workers but my problem is with the local government workers that have an over bloated   workforce of 6,000 while the Niger State workers has just 4,000 workforce" the NLC  Chairman quoted the governor.He explained further that the governor has indicated his preparedness to commence full implementation of the new minimum wage as soon as the 12-member committee put in place submits its report assuring that “from all indication, the October salary may be delayed due to implementation of the minimum wage for workers in Niger State."

Comrade Idrees Lafene noted that the minimum wage act was passed into law by the National Assembly in May, 2024, and it’s mandatory on all the governors to ensure full implementation of the wage with effect from April, 2024.

He assured that civil servants in the State will be paid with the new minimum wage in October, "But the October salary will be delayed because the governor has assured the Organized Labour that the minimum wage will be paid in October  as soon as the committee submits its report."
